    The making of urushi works involves the use of a piece of wood called a wooden basis which will be applied by multiple coats of urushi. The Appi urushi works are peopleand environmentally-friendly serveware, using only 100% natural materials for the wooden basis and urushi.

    The urushi purification technique and the number of coats are the keys to determine the durability of urushi works. A close collaboration was formed with Iwate industrial test institute (now named as Iwate industrial research institute) to establish a technique that takes full advantage of urushi's unique characteristics.

    Simplicity and timeless appeal are the characteristics of the Appi urushi works, designed to accommodate any scene or occasion. To fully appreciate the genuine beauty of the urushi works, no lacquer artwork, gold-lacquer work, or other decorations are applied.

    Domestic timbers are used in all wooden basis of the Appi urushi works. Carefully selected warpresistant woods, mainly the betula grossa, buckeye, and Japanese zelkova are utilized for a durable and crack-resistant wooden basis.

    Today, about 98% of all urushi used in Japan are imported from overseas. The Appi urushi works use a precious urushi produced in Iwate prefecture in Japan. Japanese urushi emits a pure and soft luster, offering peace of mind to users.

    Urushi is a very delicate material, affected by temperature and humidity, and the purification process can change its viscosity and luster as well. All urushi used for the Appi urushi works are purified at our Studio, giving consideration to seasons and weather to maintain its quality
